Museum of Power Bike Meet

Langford Sunday 4th August 2013

We were blessed with excellent weather for this excellent local Bike Meet Show held in the grounds of Langford Steam Museum, the old pumping station, complete with large 3 cylinder working steam pumping engine and many other exhibits.

I was up around 05.30am and after breakfast wheeled out my classic BMW R75/5, loaded the panniers and switched on the fuel. Oh dear! – a petrol leak from the right hand carburettor. This turned out to be a leaking hose – I had recently removed both carbs to replace all o-rings and jets. Quickly cutting a new piece of hose I replaced it only to see petrol seepage from a higher joint. This I fixed with a cable tie!

Climbing on to the saddle I pressed the starter button and the enging fired up on one cylinder! The right hand cylinder was not firing. I immediately saw the plug lead was loose and had come out of the coil. This meant removing a pannier, hinging up the seat and removing the tank. The plug lead was pushed back into place and all was well.

A pleasant ride to Langford saw me arriving just as the gates were being opened, around 07.30am.

With Mark Dutton also there. We set about erecting the gazebo he had with him. We finished this, placed chairs and tables with leaflets and went off for breakfast.

Others soon arrived, Peter Dutton on his K100RS, Gerry Douglas-Sherwood on his R50/2 and Ken Buchanan on his R69S. A little later we were joined by a well kept R80GS.

The day progressed with a constant stream of visitors, some taking away membership forms and old journals hopefully with a view to joining the BMW Club.

Peter and I took a walk to the museum, well worth a visit to anyone interested in old steam engines and machinery.

Our stand was next to Cannon BMW our local dealer.

This show always attracts many classic and vintage motorcycles and I saw old Triumphs, BSAs, Bantams (Dave Bickers was ring one and he called at our stand), Vincents, Douglases, hosts of Japanese bikes of all ages and some vintage Morgan 3 wheelers.

In all a very good day out with high attendance numbers.
