The George Saunders Shield

(formerly the East Anglia Trophy)

The TrophyFor many years someone in the section set a challenge for us all to encourage us to get out there on our bikes and explore our fine region.

Traditionally it was the winner of the previous year’s challenge that set the next year’s challenge, but anyone can submit a challenge before the Christmas party each year.

The principle is always straight forward, the hard part (for it would not be called a challenge if it were that simple) usually involved getting out on your bike and finding places and/or land marks within the five counties of our section and then taking a photograph of you and/or your bike as evidence that you were there.

The entries would then be submitted to the setter before (or at) the AGM which is early October.

The judging is performed by the challenge setter and, because there may be many complete entries, the manner in which the results are presented also went much towards winning.

The winner would then be awarded the actual shield – yes it is actually a real trophy – at the Christmas bash.

Unfortunately we ran out of volunteers to keep arranging this challenge each year and it was no longer set after 2017. If you would like more information about it then scroll to the bottom of the Winners lists and you will see links to the challenges we have records of and maybe you might be tempted to volunteer to set a challenge yourself.
