We will be attempting to run the very popular New Year Ride Out again this year.
We have had to cancel it in the past due to adverse weather so
please do check on this web page to see if it is still on before you
set off to join us.
Keep checking back here, this box will tell you if the ride is ON or OFF
So why not see in the New Year with a ride on your bike?
Here are the details:
- Meet at Sainsbury's Superstore in Bury St Edmunds (just off the
A14 at the junction east of the sugar beet factory turn off 09:30 for 10:00 start
- some of us will be grabbing a hot breakfast in the Cafe which opens at 09:30
before we set off (hence arriving at 09:30)
- We will only run the ride out if the weather means we can complete
it safely, we will post updates here and you can always contact
the organiser
Dik to check
- Make sure you have a full tank, or at least enough to do the
135 miles - we will only be stopping at the Three Tuns this year
(for lunch) and I don't think there's a petrol station there so
best to fill up at Sainsbury's before we go!
- Set off at 10:00 sharp (we have to make the most of the
daylight even though it is a new shorter route this year)
- It will be cold and it will be dark by the time we complete
the ride so make sure you wrap up (sound like your mum?)
- As mentioned, the route is currently 135 miles though we may
cut some corners and/or avoid some of the less-major roads
depending on the conditions
- This is a whole new route this year, I have not even ridden it yet!
- So you will need to make sure your petrol tank is full and
your bladder is empty before we set off. It is about 2 and a
half hours to the Three Tuns and then 2 hours from there back to
the start. You are welcome to peel off at any time but please
please make sure the person behind you knows that you will be
doing so (or they, and everyone behind them, will follow you
home)
- There is an option to break the afternoon with a stop at the
Newmarket Burger King for a hot drink and a loo break - I will
take a concensus at the Three Tuns to see what the majority want
to do.
This is the "gpx" file in case anyone wants to preview the route on
Garmin (you will need to rename it and remove the ".txt" from the name after you have downloaded it):
NYD-2019.gpx
And heres a link to an online map of the route on Google Maps (which means you might be able to download it to your other SatNav models if they don't support GPX files):

Don't forget, the route will be flexible on the day to account for the conditions, so make sure you
are aware of how the "drop-off" system works on ride outs so you
don't get seperated from the rest of the group. If you do not
know the system just ask, it is very simple and we will do a brief
explanation on the day.
